About Us

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is the operational arm of the State Fire Commission, established in 1979. We’re made up of more than 200 fire brigades across Tasmania, 350 career firefighters and 5000 volunteers.

As a dynamic and diverse organisation, we provide a range of services across community education and emergency response, including:

  • Bush and urban fire fighting
  • Fire investigation
  • Fire prevention and risk mitigation, including fuel reduction
  • Road crash rescue in urban areas
  • Hazardous materials incident response
  • Alarm monitoring
  • Community education on bushfires and home fire safety

What we do

TFS performs a critical role during bushfires and other emergency incidents that threaten life, property and the environment.

Working together with Tasmanian communities and government agencies, including Sustainable Timber Tasmania and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, we educate communities on bushfire preparedness and fire safety, and prevent, resource, respond to and manage bushfires.

With close cooperative relationships with other emergency services around Australia and overseas, TFS assists with major firefighting campaigns, and provides advice on emergency management issues to various local, state and national stakeholders.

We protect Tasmanians

Members of TFS are trained to very high levels of competence to ensure we know what to do in an emergency. We have a wide range of experience and skills in our ranks.

By reducing the likelihood and consequence of fires occurring, our people play an important part in making Tasmania a safer place to live.

Working alongside our emergency management partners – Tasmania Police, Tasmania State Emergency Services (SES), and Ambulance Tasmania – we respond to a range of emergencies, and are responsible for delivering emergency management services across the state, looking after Tasmanians 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
